couldn't get it going either :( What a
shame... I for one was appreciating the cradle connection as I wanted to try
different thing and I don't have a network card. (I'm running Apache on my IPAQ
though, :p ) Posted
by damn thing @ 08/29/2001 06:07 PM MST What does ActiveSync
have to do with learning what network shares are available? That's fine if they
want to support people with direct Serial/USB connections only, but i have a
WLAN connection, and should be able to be a network client completely
independent of ActiveSync.
Does it only enable copying files, or can I
stream a file directly into a media player? Posted by john @ 08/29/2001 01:01 PM MST Hmm. Based on your
comments here, I have to ask myself why did the developer bother in the first
place? Posted by Jason Dunn @ 08/29/2001 11:06 AM MST
IRDash is
interesting, but I was essentially talking about a proxy network redirector on a
PC and then a client on the PocketPC. Posted by Pete
@ 08/29/2001 08:28 AM MST It's not a real (as
in the stand-alone sense) networking client! If I had to go and hook it up in
the cradle, too, I might as well as pull the CF memory out and simply plug it
into my laptop's PCMCIA slot. To me it'd be faster :(. I see one of their DLLs
that's copied is 'smbclient.dll'... if it's really an SMB client, why does it
need ActiveSync? Why can't it hook into the network WITHOUT the cradle &
Activesync??? I mostly use Linux, but still have a few Windows machines around
here. I was happy to see this, but then I installed it, and found it still
needed the cradle & ActiveSync. Oops. No good for me :( Posted by Joe Thielen @ 08/29/2001 06:44 AM MST This app doesn't work
for me. Cradle, LAN, WLAN, all of the above--nothing works. It runs a desktop
client that apparently uses ActiveSync to connect to the PPC. (I'm not really
sure as I've already deleted it.)
Based on its description, I was hoping
for something a bit more functional. Oh well, maybe it'll get better...

How many rubles is
$49, a million? Posted by Kaopec Tate @ 08/28/2001 08:10 PM MST Like IRDash, you
mean? :-) http://www.bitbanksoftware.com/ce/index.htm#IRDASH Posted by Mike (PocketGamer.org) @ 08/28/2001 07:25
PM MST It did give me an
idea, though. How much interest is there in a File Explorer that connects to a
desktop server without involving ActiveSync or cradles? What functionality would
be wanted? Posted by
Pete @ 08/28/2001 04:34 PM MST Was so ready to buy
this, and then saw I have to have the Ipaq in the cradle even if I have a
network card. WTF is this?? How worthless is that. It's just as easy for me now
to still drag and drop files on the hard drive. Posted by Michelle @ 08/28/2001 02:29 PM MST Me neither, Pete.
I've deleted the demo off my device already. Posted by Jimbo @ 08/28/2001 02:28 PM MST Well, so far it
doesn't work either way for me! Posted by Pete
@ 08/28/2001 02:11 PM MST From the Features
page for Network Card setup - NOTE: due to limitations of current version of MS
ActiveSync connection to desktop PC cannot be established using network
interface only. Cradle is also necessary in this case. Posted by Jimbo @ 08/28/2001 02:02 PM
MST It does look like it
needs some kind of "server" type application running on your PC though....
Posted by cedrones @ 08/28/2001 01:29 PM MST This is what I got
from their site. I didn't see info about it requiring a cradle, even in the
FAQ.
I. ActiveSync cradle connection. Each Windows CE-device being
equipped with a cradle and ActiveSync software, all Pocket PC users can apply
PocketLANce to browse their LANs using this option.
II. Network card
connection. Network card use significantly increases the speed of network
connections resulting in more efficient and comfortable work. Using PocketLANce
with a network card enables you to move/copy large audio, video or multimedia
files from LAN to your Pocket PC and vice versa in a flash!
III. RAS/DUN
connection. This unique feature delivers true mobility to Pocket PC users! It
allows accessing local area network anytime from any place using mobile phone or
modem, provided either RAS or DUN service is installed on the LAN workstation.

It will work 'faster'
with a network card, but it still requires the cradle. Check out the details and
faq's. Posted by
Jimbo @ 08/28/2001 12:52 PM MST My question is can
you mount a drive?? Thats the kicker to me here. Posted by [Cruzer] @ 08/28/2001 12:51 PM MST "Network Adapter is
not required but recommended."
That seems to tell me that it will work
with a network adaptor, but it will also work in the cradle. Pretty clever guys!
Posted by Jason Dunn @ 08/28/2001 12:50 PM MST
Well, sort of. You
can't use a network card and connect to your network. You still need an
ActiveSynch connection to your PC. Doesn't make it very 'portable' does it?

see someone finally creating a real networking client! Posted by Jason Dunn @ 08/28/2001 12:28 PM MST
